If you checked out any of the new celebrity-packed Burger King ads this past week (featuring the likes of David Beckham, Jay Leno, Salma Hayek and Mary J. Blige) you hopefully enjoyed seeing the Blige ad – as it has now been pulled!
Almost as soon as it aired, the Internet started buzzing about the odd ad and the differences between it and the other ones in the series, with some calling it racist. Others think it’s a big deal about nothing, but Burger King has notably pulled the ad from the air and from their YouTube channel! Btw Blige reportedly received two million dollars for the ad!
Burger King released a statement saying “The Mary J. Blige advertisement has been pulled due to a licensing issue. BURGER KING® expects to have the Blige ads back on air soon.” Hmm… Click the jump to read how it’s being received and tell us what you think if you got to see it!
Thembisa S. Mshaka notes that “Of all the endorsers, Mary is the only one who is rude, terse, and invasive. She interrupts the store manager with a sound-check type mic squeal — from ATOP a restaurant table. Leno, Salma and Beckham have sweet, fun dispositions — and are ALL at the counter, like normal people. Mary appears out of nowwhere, mad for no reason, over the contents of a chicken wrap, which she proceeds to outline in a song where she’s not so much singing as belting.”
What do you make of this? Racist or Internet commentators freaking out about nothing? Do you believe Burger King’s statement? Let us know your thoughts!
