Word has it on the street that the mind-blowing twist in the upcoming horror movie, Cabin in The Woods (starring Thor star Chris Hemsworth) is quite a doozy and the gossip about it has all been quite positive!

Today at Gossip Overload, we have decided to promote the upcoming horror release (opening April 13th, 2012) by rating the top ten mind-blowing twists in horror movie history!

10. CRIMINAL LOVERS

In 1999, director Francois Ozon delivered one of the most chilling horror films that many have yet to see to this very day.  Criminal Lovers stars off with two sadistic lovers who end up trapped in a “cabin in the woods” (see what we did there?) with another sadistic killer. It’s Hansel and Gretel meets Hostel–and after the twist, you learn that one of the pair isn’t as sadistic as the movie has made you to believe.  A must-see for horror buffs!

9. HIGH TENSION

This French horror film by director Alexandre Aja is infamous for its twist ending where we see the psychopath killer was actually the Final Girl all along.  Although many criticize the film for this nonsensical twist ending, it definitely affected viewers for better or for worse.

8. Frailty

Frailty was a superb horror movie (directed by Bill Paxton) that actually was all about understanding sub-text, but if you did, you would expect the twist that no one saw coming.  Full of great performances, (particularly from Matthew McConaughey) this movie is quite chilling and after the twist, you won’t be able to differentiate between the heroes and the villains.

7. THE MIST

If you have seen the twist ending in The Mist, (an adaptation of a Stephen King Novella) you were probably as shocked as we were to see such a grim denouement. The movie’s disturbing ending shocked all viewers–especially those who had read the novella’s happy ending where none of the survivors bite the dust.

6. ORPHAN

Before Isabelle Fuhrman was knife-wielding Clove in The Hunger Games, she shocked audiences world-wide with her role as the sadistic child in Orphan.  When the audience found out that her character was really a middle-aged woman, it was beyond shocking!

5. IDENTITY

Identity is one of those films, you can continuously watch over again and again and always catch something new with each viewing.  After finding out what each of the ten stranded people at the motel have in common in the psychological thriller, it was definitely a mind-blowing experience!

4. SAW

By now, everybody knows the twist ending in SAW and despite what you think of the god-awful sequels that followed, you can’t deny the chilling intensity that was brought on screen when Jigsaw springs to life at the ending of the first film.

3. APRIL FOOL’S DAY

April Fool’s Day is another “cabin in the woods” slasher from the late-eighties and it is one to be recognized since the twist ending showed that all the killings of the horny teenagers were actually fake and apart of an elaborate April Fool’s joke. One of the only slashers that did not have a body count!

2. THE SIXTH SENSE

This one probably tops off everybody’s top twist in a horror movie, however even M. Night Shaymalan has stated that he ripped off the concept from an episode entitled “The Tale of The Dream Girl”  of the Canadian show, Are You Afraid of The Dark? Although brilliant in execution, we can not give this one top-billing due to the blatant plagarism of the story.

1. SLEEPAWAY CAMP

If you haven’t seen this early eightie’s slasher, then you need to see this immediately since it has one of the funniest and shocking horror twist endings ever seen! This one, I will not spoil–but for those who have seen it know it’s one of the greatest final moments ever seen in a horror movie.
